Police departments across Cuyahoga County cracked down on impaired drivers this holiday season by increasing their DUI patrols. Law enforcement shared plans for increased saturation patrols during the holiday season and New Year’s Eve with the Sun News and WEWS. Along with announcing increased patrols, the Cuyahoga County DUI Task Force and University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital discussed their Safe Rides program that offers impaired drivers a safe ride home, in partnership with Ace Taxi and Budweiser.

Tom Vilt, Child Passenger Safety Coordinator at University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital, and Safe Kids/Safe Communities member Dianna Kall, from the Cleveland Metroparks Rangers Department, provides Harry Boomer at WOIO with tips for keeping you and your family safe during the holidays.

Dr. Lawrence Quang, head of the Northern Ohio Poison Control Center, based at University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital, discusses with MSNBC the dangerous toxin levels in the popular Zhu Zhu pet hamster that was flying off the shelves during the holiday season.

Third graders at Thomas Jefferson Middle School in Euclid worked together with the Euclid Police Department, Euclid Mayor Bill Cervenik and University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital to spread the message to buckle up  every trip, every time. Seventy-five students unveiled their Thanksgiving “Giving Thanks for Life” exhibit on Monday, November 23, 2009. The News Herald covered the event.

Susan Connor, Ph.D., Research Manager for the Rainbow Injury Prevention Center, University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospitals, led a study examining the associations between high school team sport participation and health risk behaviors, such as fighting and drinking. The research was covered in a wide range of publications, including Reuters.com, Discovery Health and US News.

On October 16, 2009, The Plain Dealer covered the nearly $1 million the University Hospitals Rainbow Injury Prevention Center and Greater Cleveland Safe Communities Coalition received from the Ohio Department of Public Safety’s Traffic Office to improve safety on Cuyahoga County roadways.
