    5. The Truth About Booster Seats – In December, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), while rating 60 boosters overall, rated 9 belt-positioning boosters BEST BETS and 6 as GOOD BETS.  Eleven boosters were rated as not recommended at all because IIIHS determined they do such a poor job of fitting the belt.
      1. Technicians and parents must still check belt fit when choosing and using boosters.  As we know, some boosters are better than others in positioning seat belts, and belt geometry differs from vehicle to vehicle.  As with car seats, booster seat selection and use is really a child-by-child, vehicle-by-vehicle determination.
      2. Our staff will continue to recommend doing the 5-Step Test to be sure the booster chosen provides correct belt fit.  It takes into account the variability of kids and vehicles, and shows whether or not the product is suitable for the child and vehicle/vehicle location involved.
      3. A copy of the 5 Step Test is attached for technicians to print and keep as a reference when conducting car seat checks.
    6. Poison Prevention Awareness Week March 14-20:
      1. Curriculum and Poster Contest Packets are available.  The program is for K-5th grade.  Holcomb’s Gift Certificates or classrooms gifts from Holcomb’s will be available for all participating classes.
      2. Education materials and collateral are available to order.  Fill out the attached form and return to 216-983-1180.  Materials include:
  • Glow Germ – a hand washing kit and activity that gets kids thinking about proper hand washing
  • Spike’s Poison Prevention Adventure video and activity
  • Poison Control in Action video for adult audiences
  • Posters, stickers, brochures and bookmarks
  1. Utilization of Media – Mandy Thomas is on board to help members gain publicity for their injury prevention & traffic safety programs.  She will make available:
    1. A press release guideline .  This sheet outlines why we should use press releases to help engage our audiences.
    2. As programs are launched, there will be a tip sheet available to coalition members. This tip sheet will emphasize information that is important to the program and to the audience. These tip sheets will allow members to customize communications but also keep in line with the main message

    5. Motorcycle Safety Committee – we are forming a committee to address motorcycle fatalities in Cuyahoga County.  If you’re interesting in working with this group, call Chrystal at 216-983-1108.
  • 3.21% of all motorcycle crashes in Cuy. Co produce at least one fatality (vs. 3.78% in Ohio)
