Meeting Minutes

 

I. Announcements

January and February projects- BIG Thanks to all that participated in last meeting’s campaigns.

  • Valentine’s Day Seat Belt Initiative- Pop-up cards: HUGE success! Twenty-five organizations made ~2,030 contacts. Winter sports safety snow bunny handouts and stickers were another success! Around 1,670 materials distributed by 15 organizations. Carbon monoxide coloring sheet and carbon monoxide detectors- 15 organizations participated. Burn Awareness Week- Fifteen members participated and over 2,000 contacts were made! 

  • Super Bowl Media Outreach- BIG THANKS to Brooklyn Heights PD and Towlift for holding the press conference. Action 19 aired three stories on our coalition, Safe Rides program and DUI enforcement. GREAT JOB with Super Bowl Party Hosting Kits and media outreach. Thanks to the 23 member agencies who participated in distributing the kits.  

  • THANK YOU to all our volunteers at the Greater Cleveland Auto Show.  The booth looks great with assistance from our partners at Parma Police Department, Hughie’s and Cleveland Photo Booth.

    II. New Business

  • Ohio SADD Prevention Convention-April 16, 2010- 8:30 a.m.-2:00p.m.at Springfield Courtyard Marriott 100 South Foundation Avenue, Springfield OH 45502. No cost for Prevention Convention- free registration includes speakers, conference materials and lunch. To register contact Ricky Birt at rbirt.sadd@yahoo.com or 937.308.5646.

  • Child Passenger Safety Technicians- Refresher Course- March 3 at Auto Show at I-X Center. Certification Course- April 19, 20, 29 & 30, Mayfield Heights Fire Department, 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m.Cost $160 ($75 for registration through Safe Kids Worldwide payable directly to SKW at time of on-line registration. Training cost is $85 for class materials payable to Greater Cleveland Safe Kids. Contact Tom Vilt, Thomas.Vilt@UHhospitals.org or 216.983.1115).

  • Spring Calendar Fundraiser to help support Safe Kids Buckle Up car seat program. Calendars will be available at May’s meeting. Sales by members will run May 4- June 30. Names will be pulled June 1- June 30. Calendars are $5 and for every five you sell you get one free. We still need donations to fill up all the days.   • Poison Safety- posters, stickers, booklets and magnets available to order. We will be distributing materials during Poison Prevention Awareness Week with our partners. Special thanks to our partners at Children’s Miracle Network, REMAX, Rite Aid, Costco and Walmart. With their help we will reach 16,000 people throughout Northeast Ohio.

  • Playground Safety- Playground Safety Awareness Week is April 26-30, 2010. Brochures will be available soon and can be distributed to parents, schools and anywhere with a playground. Arthur coloring book available now for children. Fill out a Playground Safety Request Form to get your materials.

  • St. Patrick’s Day- Buckle Up Four Leaf clover magnets. Twenty-five kits were available at the meeting, and all of them went out to our members. Impaired Driving viral campaign with a “How Irish Are You?” email. Go to www.gethomesafecleveland.com to receive answers from quiz, names of cities conducting DUI checkpoints and patrols and safety messages. Send it out to all of your contacts, please! St. Patrick’s Day posters available. Fill out a St. Patrick’s Day Request Formto receive yours.

  • Mother’s Day Seat Belt Initiative- Pop-up cards for children to remind mothers to “Buckle Up for Me.” Kits have craft instructions, card stock and all cut outs for card. Please send us your logo to customize the back of the card. Request forms are available for Mother’s Day Pop-up cards.

  • Bulk Bike Helmet Sales- $8.50 purchase price. A minimum of 12 helmets must be ordered. Payments must be received with order and please submit one check per order. Please allow four weeks for delivery. Sizes include: toddler (male & female), child (male & female), youth (male & female), adult s/m (unisex) and adult m/ (unisex).Updated order forms available. Bike helmet measuring tapes are also available.

  • Sports Safety Initiatives- Spring into Sports Safety Activity books includes safety tips for kids and parents, crossword puzzle, matching activity and helmet design. Designed to take to classrooms and recreation centers with a more relaxed feel. Request forms for sports safety are available.

  • Safe Kids Week is April 25-May 3. This year’s theme is Sports Safety. Proposed plan is kick off at local YMCA and having more interactive and engaged activities. More information to follow. We definitely need your help with this event, so make sure to keep us in mind!

  • Teen driving- We are partnering with Tuxedo Junction and KISSFM to distribute tuxedo pocket cards with every tux rental. Depending on quantity, we may have additional pocket cards.

  • Click It or Ticket- Running from May 24-June 6. Primary audience is males ages 18-34. Day or Night—Click It or Ticket messaging. Activities will include: leafleting campaign, balloon release at all the elementary schools with a Sun News, billboards (electronic and paper), Clickin’ with Mr. Chicken, Health Care Seat Belt promotion (having doctors write out a “prescription” to wear seat belts), Speedway Clicks (tentative date Friday May 28), KISSFM Multimedia Contest, Buckle U at local college campus with electronic billboards), High School Click it for a ticket (having high school students wearing seat belts receiving a ticket for a raffle with the chance to win a gift card with the  amount of a real seat belt ticket), High Visibility enforcement efforts, banners,  yard signs, posters and marquees messages. Kick off event- working on approaching Fox 8 to help us conduct a “scavenger hunt” for belted Cleveland landmarks. Hoping to have “Kickin’ it with Kenny” help. Unveiling the CIOT “bat signal” on front of Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

  • Tween Seat Belt Campaign- Two creative concepts for program in Parma, Parma Heights and Seven Hills for parents of tweens 13-15-years-old. If you know any parents of tweens that could help with message selection, please contact Jennifer Walker at 216.983.1161 or Jennifer.Walker@UHhospitals.org.

  • Kohl’s Safe Rides for All Kids Teen Driver Campaign- Formerly “Use It or Lose It High School Seat Belt Challenge.” There is a new direction for 2010.  It will not include a contest and will not require a lot of work from school personnel. New creative concepts in the works.

  • Safe Sitter classes available online. Contact Tracey Stehura at 216.983.1110 or Tracey.Stehura@UHhospitals.org if you want to host a class.

  • We are working to update and revamp the Injury Prevention Center/Safe Kids website. Contact Mandy Thomas at 216.983.1105 or Mandy.Thomas@UHhospitals.org with feedback and new ideas for the website.

    III. Coalition Business

    May meeting is Tuesday May 4 from 9:30 a.m.-11:00 a.m. at Cleveland Metroparks Rangers Departments Headquarters at 4600 Valley Parkway, Fairview Park OH.
