I.Announcements/Old Business

St. Patrick’s Day Campaign

  • THANK YOU to everyone that participated in the email campaign! 
  • We had 551 hits to the website during the 10 days surrounding St. Patty’s. 

Safe Kids Week

  • Kick off at Parma Safety Fair- reached approximately 2,000 children with sports safety information. We partnered with Ridgewood Family YMCA.
  • “Play It Safe” program- THANKS to all who participated.
  • “Play It Safe” is designed to educate children about sports safety by providing local recreation and community centers with a complete program to implement at their facility. Program included activities, handouts and giveaways.
  • Four YMCAs and 22 local recreation centers participated and reached over 1,000 children with our message.

Poison Prevention Week

  • VERY successful campaign this year thanks to you!
  • Over 53,111 total pieces of printed materials to different agencies, and a total of 3,082 contacts made at safety fairs and poison presentations.
  • Posters from the contest winners from K-2 and 3-5 were submitted to the National Poison Prevention Poster Contest in Washington, D.C.

 

II. New Business

Motorcycle Safety Month

  • Kick off press event at Valley View Quaker Steak & Lube on May 5- BIG SUCCESS 
  • We’re partnering with WMMS to promote motorcycle safety all summer long. 
  • Our partners at State Farm Insurance, Quaker Steak & Lube and WMMS are teaming up with the Safe Communities Motorcycle Safety Subcommittee to promote motorcycle safety. 

Ford “Future of Safety” 2010 Grassroots Tour

  • THANKS to all our members who came out on Monday, May 10 at UH Lakeside Gardens. 
  • Cleveland was first stop on 55 market tour. 
  • Safety technologies included inflatable seat belts, MyKeyÔ (teen safety tool), Cross Traffic Alert and Collision Warning System.

National Speakers on Underage Drinking and Impaired Driving

  • University Hospitals’ Addiction Recovery Services brought in Dr. Ralph Hingson, Director of Epidemiology and Prevention Research at the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) on May 13 and May 14.

Railroad Safety

  • Because of the approximately 744 people who were killed and 1,372 injured in 2008 involving trains, our coalition is participating in the Safe Crossings Program, part of CN’s All Aboard for Safety community education program.
  • We have curriculums for classrooms, posters for public, fact sheets for parents and Safe Crossing placemats to bring to family friendly restaurants.
  • Fill out a request form to get your railroad safety materials.

Bike Helmet Summer Program

  • The bike helmet summer program will allow Greater Cleveland Safe Kids/ Safe Communities Coalition members to encourage more children in their communities to wear helmets and reward the children who already wear them. Kits include rewards for the three different times children are caught wearing their helmets.
  • Fill out a request form to get your bike helmet reward kit.

Bulk Bike Helmet Sales- $8.50 purchase price. A minimum of 12 helmets must be ordered. Payments must be received with order and please submit one check per order. Please allow four weeks for delivery. Sizes include: toddler (male & female), child (male & female), youth (male & female), adult s/m (unisex) and adult m/ (unisex).

Updated order forms available. Bike helmet measuring tapes are also available.

Click It or Ticket- May 24-June 6

  • Click it for a ticket- Working with KISS FM to conduct a contest where motorists “caught” wearing their seat belts or who take a seat belt pledge qualify to win prizes.
  • Members may conduct Buckle Downs (safety belt checkpoints where motorists are awarded prizes for wearing their seat belts) at community events.   We can provide auto air fresheners and prize drawing vouchers for distribution at your events.
  • Buckle U- Animated messages and spotter contest promotions on outdoor LCD boards on Carnegie and E.22nd; have posters and fliers to give to those interested in expanding Buckle U to colleges in their communities (contact Chrystal 216.983.1108).
  • Speedway Clicks- Speedway agreed to put decals on all their gas pumps; on Friday, May 28, from 11a.m.-1p.m., coalition members will be conducting Buckle Down events at 13 local Speedways. 
  • Balloon Release- On May 17, 3rd graders from participating elementary schools will be doing a “Buckle Up Balloon Release.”
  • High School Initiative- Students that drive onto participating schools’ parking lots buckled up will receive “tickets” redeemable for rewards. The ticket will be the students’ entry form for the drawing to receive a gift/debit card for the amount of real seat belt ticket, which is around $108.  
  • Kick off event- On May 24 unveiling the Click It or Ticket “bat signal” on Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. More information to come.
  • Media Event- On May 25, Fox8 Kickin’ It with Kenny will have four fun, hands-on spots to show importance of seat belt use and educate the community about Click It or Ticket.

Water Safety

  • National Boating Safety Week is May 22-28. We have boat safety brochures available.
  • Water Safety Activity Kit- Designed for recreation and community centers to teach children about water safety. Kits include three activities, handouts and water safety stickers. More water safety stickers are available.
  • Fill out a request form to receive your boat safety brochures, Water Safety Activity kits and water safety stickers.

Father’s Day Seat Belt Reminder

  • We’ll provide members, free of charge, with pop-up cards for children to remind their fathers that “The Best Dads Always Buckle Up.” Kits have craft instructions, card stock and all cut outs for card.
  • Request forms are available for Father’s Day Pop-up cards.

Lead Poison Awareness

  • Now available 2008 Ohio Department of Health Annual Testing Data (http://www.odh.ohio.gov/healthStats/disease/lead/lead1.aspx)
  • 2010 Greater Cleveland Lead Advisory Council 5th Annual Symposium “Healthy Kids, Homes and Places:  Ensuring a Better Future for our Community.”

III. New Program Launches and Updates

Multicultural Communities Occupant Protection Program

  • East Cleveland Seat Belt usage is 46% while nationwide use is 84%.
  • The East Cleveland Seat Belt Coalition held their first meeting on April 1, 2010 at Shaw High School. The purpose was to provide the basic foundation for developing and implementing an effective community-based seat belt safety campaign. Membership toolkits include seat belt covers, note pads and toolkit flash drives from Meharry Medical College.

Kohl’s Safe Rides for All Kids Teen Driver Program

  • Theme: My Car, My Rules; Empowers teens to make rules for everyone in their car. #1 rule is always Buckle Up
  • It is replacing “Use It or Lose It”. Reaching more teens through a broad based marketing campaign with strong Facebook component, TV spots on cable and Hulu and KISS-FM texting/concert campaign.

NHTSA Parents of Tweens Campaign

  • Focus groups of parents and key leadership in Parma, Parma Heights and Seven Hills conducted. Preparing for Summer 2010 Launch.
  • Theme: Just Get it Across

IV. Coalition Business

  • Spring Calendar Fundraiser to help support Safe Kids Buckle Up car seat program. Calendars are available now. Sales by members will run now- June 30. Names will be pulled June 1- June 30. Calendars are $5 and for every five you sell you get one free.

  • July meeting is Tuesday July 13 from 9:30 a.m.-11:00 a.m. in Westlake.
  • May SRAD/DUI Task Force Meeting  is Thursday May 20 at 11:00 a.m. at Parma Police Department 5555 Powers Blvd., Parma OH .
