Meeting Minutes
Old Business
Click It or Ticket – thank you for everyone that helped with enforcement, Buckle Up for Burgers and everything else!
Its Ok 2 Nag – Contest that encouraged women to submit a photo of their man buckled up
47 entries worked hard to get the votes – more than 1800 votes
266 Facebook posts, 285 Facebook shares and 17 tweets about seat belts
Bicycle Safety – thank you to all that participated!
Nine police departments participated in helmet incentive program
Ten schools participated in Bike to School Day events
Parade the Circle – thanks to all those who came out and helped! It was our best to date!
Buckle Your Beats – 13 entries of rap/songs with great seat belt messages!
The winner was Torre Shaw with 180 votes.
Golf Outings-Seat Belt Messaging – thank you to Mike Pecoraro and Mark Kwiatkowski for helping Safe Communities by sponsoring “Buckle Up” holes at your golf outings!
New Business
Motorcycle events – Quaker Steak & Lube – Date TBD Respect the Road – Reflect Yourself contest judging; Ride Smart – Ride Sober on August 15- National DUI Campaign Kickoff

Poison Safety: Laundry Detergent look-alikes – order form attached
Many children are confusing laundry detergent pads with candy. To educate the community on this issue, we have fact sheets, flyers, Poison Help magnets and Poison help phone stickers available.
Summer Safety – order form attached
Materials available: summer safety fans, CD of summer safety press release templates and reserve the doctor/nurse/firefighter cutouts for your next event.
Keep Your Family Tight – photo contest via wzakcleveland.com
Grand prize for the photo competitions is a 4-pack of tickets to the Stone Soul Picnic at Jacobs Pavilion on August 25.
Photo submission is July 9 –July 27; voting is July 30-August 17
Pool Safety – order form attached
Materials that are available include brochures, handouts and stickers.
If you are interested in being a part of the Pool Safely Day on July 26, please contact Mandy (mandy.thomas@uhhospitals.org). Partnership includes on-site presence, giveaways and media opportunity.
Hyperthermia Prevention – order form attached
Materials include tool kit with handouts, posters, PSA and tips sheets and printed posters.

Booster Seat
Observations of 474 children in 415 vehicles at daycares, fast food restaurants and shopping centers
Findings: 44% were in booster seats; 31% were unrestrained; 22% were in seat belts; 3% were in car seats; 91% rode in the back seat
Be a Booster Booster – direct mail piece was sent to 10,000 parents of 6-7 year olds (need members to serve as distribution points to redeem these kits)
Car pool kits to parents available while supplies last (contact Jen at Jennifer.walker@UHhospitals.org to get direct mail piece to pass out)

Just Get It Across – NHTSA demonstration grant now open to parents in Northeast Ohio with 11-15 year olds
Recent promotion included chance to win Nickelback tickets and private meet & greet with the band – almost 700 entries
Future campaigns being planned for the fall
Legally Addicted Play – Monday, September 10 at Mayfield Village Civic Center at 7 pm. FREE to the public
Following the play will be a panel led by Recovery Resources addressing teens and prescription drug abuse.

Seat Belt Coalition – provides leadership in implementing effective community based minority seat belt safety programs
Expanding in 2012: event planning (CIOT); seat belt counts; faith-based outreach; beauty salon/barber shop engagement; working collectively to reduce disparities; organization and individuals welcome to join
Expanding from East Clevelandto North Randall, Warrensville Heights, BedfordHeights, Maple Heightsand Cleveland (Glenville, Collinwood, Hough)

My Ride My Rules Football Game Traffic Safety Activities include opportunity for teens to film rules for their ride, Distract-a-Match challenge and prize wheel.
Dates available: Sept. 21 & 22, Sept. 28 & 29, Oct. 5 & 6 and Oct. 12 & 13.
International Walk to School Day is October 3 – order form attached
Materials include: toolkits available with everything schools need to take on their own day and awesome giveaways.
The school that has the highest percentage of children walk to school during that week will receive a Rockin’ Recess with the Radio Disney team.

Opportunityavailable to establish a year-round school safety committee to improve child pedestrian safety around a chosen school and to increase the number of children that walk to school
Fire Prevention Week is October 7-13 – order form attached
Materials include: fire prevention curriculum, safety tips for children and adults, family checklist, fire prevention press release template and stickers
Halloween Safe Kids – order form attached
Materials include: activity books, bags, reflective giveaway, tip sheets and posters

Safe Sitter – contact Tracey (tracey.stehure@UHhospitals.org) if you are interested in hosting
New opportunity to host Safe Sitter classes for low-income 11-13-year-olds free of charge.
Responsibilities include providing space and promoting the class. Would be great if host could provide transportation and/or lunch and snacks.

Teddy Bear Day at the Zoo – September 22 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Kids with a teddy bear or any plush toy will receive free Zoo admission with a paid adult. There will be activities for kids to participate in.

Boo at the Zoo – October 18-21 and 25-28 from 5:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.
Shifts are from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. and 7:30 – 9:30 p.m. You may volunteer for one or more shifts. All shifts include set up or clean up.
If you are volunteering a teen organization, an adult representative must be present.
