Greater Cleveland Safe Kids/Safe Communities Meeting Minutes

Thank you to Sohan Shah for speaking to the group about his findings about distracted driving.

Old Business

  • Patrick’s Day – Community Outreach – thank you to everyone who posted St. Patrick’s Day messaging on their social media pages.
  • Car Seat Recycling Day – thanks to our coalition members that came out to help take apart car seats in March.
    • Next car seat recycling day is set for Tuesday, June 27 from 9a-1p. Contact Rachel to volunteer.

New Business

  • Safety Calendar – contact Mandy ( to order
    • Topics include bicycle safety, summer safety, water safety, hyperthermia prevention and fireworks/4th of July safety.
  • Bicycle Safety – contact Mandy ( to order materials and learn more
    • School Outreach – Bike to School Week (May 8-12) kits will be available. Kits include curriculum, giveaways, ideas for hosting events, etc.
    • Community Outreach – limited amount of materials for you to take out. Helmet fitting guides, general bike safety, giveaways and helmet fitting tapes are available.
      • If you have an event that you want bike safety materials/activity at, please let Mandy know. We have great activities for you to borrow.

  • Safety Town Toolkits – contact Mandy ( to reserve your Safety Town toolkits
    • Toolkits for bicycle safety, poison prevention and child passenger are available.

  • Hyperthermia Prevention – contact Mandy ( to order postcards (great for fit stops)

    • Materials include handouts, infographics, curriculums and stickers
    • Want to do a World’s Largest Swimming Lesson on Thursday, June 22. Contact Mandy to partner.

  • Lending Library – contact Mandy ( to reserve activities. Dates filling up fast so please tell us your dates soon.
    • Safe Communities activities include Fatal Vision Goggles, Sum it up cup, Distract a Match, Brain Behind the Wheel and Seat Belt Survivor
    • Safe Kids activities include poison or Halloween ring toss, summer safety series with dart board and pull up banners, water safety banner and sports safety, pedestrian safety and Halloween bean bag toss
    • General activities include plinko with safety questions, corn hole and spin wheels
  • Child Passenger Safety Roll Call – contact Mandy ( to learn more about having a child passenger safety technician come to your roll call to teach law enforcement about CPS.
  • Safety Squad Fire Safety – contact Carli ( to reserve a show
    • Participating schools will receive 25 free smoke detectors.
    • Quantities are limited and cost for show will still apply.
  • International Walk to School Day – contact Mandy ( if you are interested in your school being the STAR school for the 2017-2018 school year
    • International Walk to School Week is October 2-6. Stay tuned for more details.
  • Safe Communities Facebook – please “like” Cuyahoga County Safety Communities on Facebook ( )
  • SIDNE – contact Rachel ( to schedule the SIDNE at your school for the prom/graduation season and summer events
  • Driver Education Scholarship Program – contact Rachel ( to help with contacting the students in Euclid, Shaw, Collinwood and Glenville
    • Partnering with New Beginnings Driving School in Euclid
  • Click It or Ticket Kickoff- Join us on Monday, May 15 from 12p-2p at Brook Park Recreation Center
    • Each organization will receive rocks that are painted by the students at Ford Intermediate School in Brook Park

    • Event will be Tri-C Western Campus in Parma on Saturday June 24 from 10:30a-12:30p
    • Need help with local vendors including tire companies, car shops, etc.
    • Also need volunteers to help set up from 7:30a-10:30a
    • Students will register with Eventbrite for $15. At the event, they will receive a $25 gift card.

  • Drugs and Addiction 911Monday May 15 at 13601 Ridge Rd., North Royalton from 6:30-8:30p
    • Topic will be “Empowering yourself and your family to be a part of the solution.”

    • Fundraising Opportunity – visit to buy a duck to support Greater Cleveland Safe Kids/Safe Communities coalition.
      • Ducks are $10 a duck or 3 ducks for $20. If your duck wins the race you receive a prize too.
      • Half of the money from each duck comes to our coalition.
