Walk to School Day 2006
October 3-7 was International Walk to School week. Thirteen Greater Cleveland elementary schools celebrated by walking to school with parents or teachers, identifying common hazards, and practicing safe street crossing skills.
Sunview Elementary School, in Lyndhurst, held an assembly to teach safe street crossing skills and provided stranger danger tips. Following the assembly students walked around school grounds looking for hazards. Healthy fruit and snacks were given to the students following the walk.
Ridgebury Elementary School, in Lyndhurst, participated by forming a “walking school bus”. The first group of students and parents met at the corner of Thornbury and Alvey Road. As they walked to school, the group stopped at all the streets along the way to form the “walking school bus”. Following the walk, a school assembly was held to discuss safety.
Columbus Road Elementary School, in Bedford Hts., met with local police officers at the Bedford Hts. Police Department for breakfast and a safety assembly. Following the assembly, students walked with parents and officers to school. The week leading to the walk was full of safety activities and daily safety announcements.
Several schools wrapped up their walk with school assemblies or safety activities for children and/or parents. The six other schools participating were:
- Mound Elementary in Cleveland,
- Willow Elementary in Cleveland
- Richmond Hts. Elementary in Richmond Hts.,
- Onaway Elementary in Shaker Heights,
- Chapman Elementary in Strongsville,
- Adrian Elementary in South Euclid,
