Walk to School Day 2007

This October, our center worked with the Parma City School District to produce “Walk to School Day.” Walk to School day was held at several Parma elementary schools, and it served to remind students, parents, and teachers of the safety rules for pedestrians. Our staff, community leaders, teachers, parents, and students met on various days and walked to school together. Everyone was careful to follow rules like looking three ways (left-right-left) before crossing the street and never running across the street. Students and teachers also had the opportunity to have our center visit their classrooms. We did interactive activities to demonstrate various pedestrian safety rules. A favorite was an activity using a rubber chicken that showed students how talking on a cell phone or listening to music while walking can distract them. Not being aware of surroundings can put pedestrians in danger. Students also had family members and friends fill out pledge cards that said they promised to walk safe and be a safe pedestrian.
